Kerala Braces for Intensifying Heatwave as IMD Issues Yellow Alert Across 12 Districts, Warns of Rising Temperatures and Health Risks

Temperatures expected to rise 2–3°C above normal; authorities warn of health risks and fire hazards

Thiruvananthapuram, March 26:
A heatwave-like situation is intensifying across Kerala, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert in 12 districts. Officials have cautioned that temperatures in several parts of the state are likely to remain significantly above seasonal averages over the coming days.

Rising Temperatures Across Districts

According to IMD forecasts, daytime temperatures could peak at around 38°C in Kollam, Kottayam, and Palakkad. Several other districts—including Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, and Kannur—may experience highs close to 37°C.

In Thiruvananthapuram, Malappuram, and Kasaragod, temperatures are expected to reach approximately 36°C, which is about 2 to 3 degrees higher than normal for this time of year.

Meteorologists note that the combination of high temperatures and humidity will make conditions particularly uncomfortable, especially in coastal and non-hilly regions.

Health Risks and Safety Advisory

Authorities have warned that prolonged exposure to such conditions could lead to heat-related illnesses, including heatstroke, dehydration, and sunburn.

Residents have been advised to avoid direct sunlight between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., when heat intensity is at its peak. Health officials recommend staying hydrated throughout the day, even in the absence of thirst, and limiting intake of beverages like alcohol, caffeine, and sugary drinks that can worsen dehydration.

Wearing loose, light-coloured cotton clothing and using protective gear such as hats, umbrellas, and footwear when outdoors are also strongly advised. Diet recommendations include increased consumption of fruits, vegetables, and fluids such as oral rehydration solutions and traditional cooling drinks like buttermilk.

Fire Risk and Environmental Concerns

The prevailing hot and dry conditions have also heightened the risk of fires. Authorities have flagged potential fire hazards in crowded areas such as markets, buildings, and waste disposal sites.

There is also an elevated risk of forest fires, particularly in regions close to wooded areas. Residents and tourists have been urged to strictly follow safety guidelines issued by forest authorities to prevent accidental fires.

Guidelines for Schools and Workplaces

Educational institutions have been instructed to ensure access to clean drinking water and proper ventilation in classrooms and examination halls. Schools are also advised to limit outdoor activities for students during peak heat hours.

Outdoor workers—including delivery personnel, construction labourers, and law enforcement staff—are being urged to take frequent breaks, use protective gear, and remain hydrated to reduce the risk of heat stress.

Vulnerable Groups at Higher Risk

Health authorities have highlighted that certain groups—including the elderly, children, pregnant women, and individuals with pre-existing medical conditions—are particularly vulnerable during extreme heat.

Caregivers and families are encouraged to take additional precautions to protect these groups and monitor them for early signs of heat-related illness.

Why This Matters

Kerala typically experiences high humidity, which can intensify the impact of even moderate temperature increases. The current rise above normal levels signals early heat stress conditions that could strain public health systems and disrupt daily activities if not managed effectively.

What’s Next

Officials have urged the public to stay updated with advisories issued by the IMD and disaster management authorities. Immediate medical attention is recommended if symptoms such as dizziness, excessive sweating, or fatigue occur.

With temperatures expected to remain elevated, authorities stress the importance of preventive measures and public awareness to minimize health risks during the ongoing heatwave conditions.
