Partly cloudy skies to prevail; gusty winds and lightning forecast in parts of West Bengal and Sikkim
Kolkata, April 6: Kolkata and its surrounding areas are expected to witness light rain accompanied by thunderstorms over the next 24 hours, according to the India Meteorological Department. The forecast points to partly cloudy conditions from Monday morning to Tuesday morning, with brief spells of rain likely later in the day.
Rain and Temperature Outlook
The Alipore Meteorological Department has indicated that light showers with thunder and lightning may occur during the afternoon or evening hours. Daytime temperatures are expected to remain moderate, with the maximum around 31°C and the minimum near 23°C.
Weather Activity in North Bengal and Sikkim
In the sub-Himalayan region, weather conditions are likely to be more intense. Several areas in Sikkim may receive light to moderate rainfall, while higher altitudes could also experience snowfall.
Districts such as Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Cooch Behar, and Alipurduar are expected to witness isolated thunderstorms accompanied by rain. The department has also forecast strong winds with speeds of 30 to 40 kmph along with lightning activity in these regions.
No Major Change Expected
Officials from the weather department have said that there is no significant change expected in the prevailing weather pattern over the next few days. The region is likely to continue experiencing similar pre-monsoon conditions, including intermittent cloud cover and localized rainfall.
Seasonal Context
April typically marks the onset of pre-monsoon weather in eastern India. This period is often associated with thunderstorms, locally known as “Kalbaisakhi,” which bring short spells of rain, gusty winds, and lightning.
What It Means for Residents
The expected rainfall may bring temporary relief from the heat in Kolkata. However, residents have been advised to stay cautious during thunderstorms, particularly due to the risk of lightning and strong winds.
With changing weather conditions, commuters and residents in affected districts are advised to keep track of updates and plan accordingly.
