West Bengal Chief Minister honours the literary icon on his death anniversary, cautions against political distortion of historical figures
Kolkata, April 8: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday paid tribute to eminent writer Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay on his death anniversary, highlighting his contribution to literature and India’s national consciousness while warning against what she described as attempts to misuse his legacy.
In a message posted on social media platform X, Banerjee described Bankim Chandra as one of the leading figures of the Bengal Renaissance, crediting him with shaping modern Bengali literature through his intellectual depth and powerful use of language. She said his works continue to inspire generations and remain relevant even today.
The Chief Minister noted that Bankim Chandra’s writings played a significant role during British colonial rule by fostering a sense of self-respect and patriotism among Indians. Referring to Vande Mataram, composed by the writer, she said the song continues to evoke strong national sentiment and respect for those who sacrificed their lives for the country.
Alongside her tribute, Banerjee also raised concerns about what she termed the distortion of Bengal’s cultural legacy. She alleged that certain groups were attempting to reinterpret the contributions of iconic figures for “petty political gains,” adding that such efforts often come from those unfamiliar with the region’s history and heritage.
Without naming any individual or organisation, she asserted that the people of West Bengal take pride in their cultural icons and would respond firmly to any attempts to disrespect or misrepresent them.
Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, who lived from 1838 to 1894, is widely regarded as a pioneer of modern Indian literature. His novel Anandamath introduced Vande Mataram, which later became a key symbol during India’s freedom movement and was adopted as the national song.
The Chief Minister’s remarks come amid ongoing debates over the interpretation of historical figures in contemporary political discourse. Her statement underscores the importance of preserving the original context and contributions of cultural icons, particularly in a state where literary and intellectual traditions remain central to public identity.
The tribute reflects both recognition of Bankim Chandra’s enduring legacy and a broader message on safeguarding historical narratives from political reinterpretation.
