UNION HOME MINISTER AMIT SHAH PAYS TRIBUTE TO DR. RAMMANOHAR LOHIA ON HIS BIRTH ANNIVERSARY, RECALLS HIS LEGACY OF SOCIAL JUSTICE AND NATIONAL UNITY

New Delhi, March 23: Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah paid heartfelt tributes to noted freedom fighter, socialist thinker and political leader Ram Manohar Lohia on his birth anniversary, remembering him as a visionary who dedicated his life to the upliftment of the marginalized and the strengthening of democratic values in India.

In a message shared publicly, the Home Minister acknowledged Dr. Lohia’s enduring contribution to India’s political and social landscape. He emphasized that Lohia’s ideas on social justice, equality, and decentralised governance continue to inspire generations and remain relevant in contemporary policymaking and public discourse.

Dr. Rammanohar Lohia, born on March 23, 1910, was a prominent figure in India’s freedom movement and later emerged as one of the foremost voices of socialist ideology in independent India. Closely associated with the Congress Socialist Party during the struggle against British colonial rule, Lohia was deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy but developed his own distinct framework centered on equality, anti-caste discrimination, and economic justice.

Highlighting these contributions, Amit Shah noted that Dr. Lohia consistently advocated for the empowerment of backward classes, women, and economically weaker sections. His call for “Sapta Kranti” (Seven Revolutions) — a framework addressing inequalities related to caste, gender, race, and economic status — remains a significant ideological contribution to Indian political thought.

The Home Minister also underscored Lohia’s emphasis on linguistic equality and his efforts to promote the use of Indian languages in governance and education. Dr. Lohia believed that linguistic inclusivity was essential for deepening democracy and ensuring broader participation in national development.

Remembering Lohia’s role in the freedom struggle, Shah stated that his fearless opposition to colonial rule and his repeated imprisonment reflected his unwavering commitment to India’s independence. Even after independence, Lohia continued to challenge social hierarchies and economic disparities, advocating policies aimed at creating a more equitable society.

Dr. Lohia’s political journey also included his role as a parliamentarian, where he was known for his sharp critiques and principled stands on issues concerning the poor and underrepresented. His efforts helped shape opposition politics in India and contributed to the evolution of a multi-party democratic system.

On the occasion, several leaders across the political spectrum also paid homage to Dr. Lohia, reiterating his importance as a thinker whose ideas transcended political boundaries. His writings and speeches continue to be studied for their clarity, moral conviction, and focus on grassroots empowerment.

Amit Shah concluded his tribute by reaffirming that the government remains committed to the ideals of inclusive development and social justice—principles that Dr. Lohia championed throughout his life. He called upon citizens, especially the youth, to draw inspiration from Lohia’s dedication to nation-building and his relentless pursuit of equality.

As the nation remembers Dr. Rammanohar Lohia on his birth anniversary, his legacy stands as a reminder of the enduring importance of social reform, democratic participation, and the continuous effort to build a just and inclusive India.
