Vijay Intensifies Tamil Nadu Poll Campaign with Tirunelveli Rally Amid Nomination Disputes

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam chief addresses supporters in southern districts as candidate nominations trigger mixed responses across constituencies

Tirunelveli, April 8: Actor-turned-politician Vijay stepped up his campaign for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections on Tuesday with a major public meeting in Tirunelveli, even as his party navigates a series of nomination-related controversies across the state.

The leader of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) is scheduled to address supporters at KTC Nagar, backing party candidates contesting from Tirunelveli and neighbouring Tenkasi districts.

Campaign Push in Southern Districts

The Tirunelveli rally marks a key leg of Vijay’s outreach in southern Tamil Nadu, a region seen as politically significant in the upcoming elections. Local authorities have granted permission for the event, imposing 51 conditions related to security, crowd management, and maintaining public order.

Party representatives said they would comply with the guidelines but raised concerns over what they described as unusually strict conditions applied to their programmes.

Following the meeting, Vijay is expected to conduct a roadshow through several areas including Thalayuthu, Thachanallur, Washermanpet, Samadhanapuram, and the court complex zone, before returning to the rally venue.

The party is also awaiting official clearance to hold similar campaign events in Pudukkottai, Tenkasi, Mayiladuthurai, and Ranipet.

Nomination Scrutiny Across Constituencies

The campaign comes at a time when TVK candidates are facing varied scrutiny during the nomination process in different constituencies.

Vijay’s own nomination from Tiruchy East was accepted without objection. However, his nomination in Perambur briefly came under review after a rival candidate raised concerns regarding alleged property tax dues. Election officials later cleared the nomination after the issue was clarified.

In Villivakkam, the nomination of party functionary Adhav Arjuna was initially withheld due to incomplete documentation. It was subsequently accepted after additional details were submitted.

Controversy in Edappadi

The situation took a more serious turn in Edappadi, where the nomination of TVK candidate Arun Kumar was rejected. The development drew political attention after reports emerged that the candidate had gone missing. Attempts to field a substitute candidate were also unsuccessful, as the nomination was not accepted.

In contrast, nominations filed by TVK candidates in Chidambaram were approved without objections, highlighting inconsistencies in how scrutiny is being applied across constituencies.

Why This Matters

The nomination stage is a crucial part of the electoral process, determining which candidates are eligible to contest. Disputes or rejections can significantly affect a party’s presence in key constituencies.

For TVK, a relatively new entrant in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, these developments come at a critical time as it seeks to establish itself ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

Official Response

Party officials have maintained that they are complying with all electoral requirements and have raised concerns over what they perceive as uneven scrutiny of their candidates. They have also reiterated their commitment to continuing the campaign despite the challenges.

Looking Ahead

With campaigning gaining momentum, Vijay’s Tirunelveli rally is expected to set the tone for upcoming outreach programmes across the state. The party’s ability to manage nomination-related issues while sustaining voter engagement will likely play a key role in shaping its electoral prospects in the months ahead.
