Prime Minister Narendra Modi urges lawmakers to back measures aimed at increasing women’s representation in Parliament and state assemblies.
New Delhi, April 9: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday appealed to Members of Parliament to support initiatives aimed at strengthening women’s reservation in legislative bodies, calling it a crucial step toward making India’s democracy more inclusive.
In a written article, the Prime Minister highlighted the need to improve women’s participation in decision-making institutions, stating that the move reflects the aspirations of women across the country.
The Prime Minister emphasised that women constitute nearly half of India’s population and are playing an increasingly important role in sectors such as science, technology, entrepreneurship, sports, and public service. He noted that greater representation of women in legislatures would bring diverse perspectives into policymaking, which could improve governance outcomes and make public policy more responsive.
Referring to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam enacted in 2023, the Prime Minister described it as a significant step toward ensuring greater inclusiveness in governance. The law provides for reservation of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies and is aimed at addressing the longstanding underrepresentation of women in Indian politics.
Highlighting the broader significance of the initiative, the Prime Minister urged MPs across party lines to support efforts to strengthen women’s reservation. He said such measures would reinforce constitutional values and deepen democratic traditions.
India has historically witnessed relatively low representation of women in legislative bodies compared to their population share. Increasing their participation is expected to improve inclusivity, strengthen governance, and encourage more women to engage in public life.
With the legal framework already in place, attention is now turning to implementation and political consensus. The Prime Minister’s appeal signals a renewed push to prioritise women’s representation as part of India’s evolving democratic framework.
