Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer admitted his side’s mistakes in the field and with the ball proved costly after Delhi Capitals pulled off a record chase in Dharamshala.
In a high-scoring Indian Premier League 2026 clash at Dharamshala on Monday night, Shreyas Iyer said Punjab Kings let the match slip away because of poor bowling execution and costly fielding lapses against Delhi Capitals.
Despite posting a strong total of 210 for 5, Punjab Kings failed to defend the target as Delhi chased down 216 for 7 in 19 overs, registering a three-wicket victory and the highest successful run chase ever at the Dharamshala venue.
Shreyas Iyer Admits Team Errors
Speaking after the match, Iyer offered a blunt assessment of Punjab’s performance, saying the team fell short in two crucial areas.
According to the PBKS captain, the conditions at Dharamshala were more challenging for batting than the final score suggested because the pitch offered seam movement and uneven bounce.
He said Punjab’s fielding mistakes ultimately changed the course of the game, particularly after the side dropped two important catches during Delhi’s chase.
Punjab Kings have struggled in the field throughout the season, with the team recording the highest number of dropped catches in IPL 2026 so far.
Decision Against Using Yuzvendra Chahal
Iyer also addressed questions surrounding the decision not to use spinner Yuzvendra Chahal during Delhi’s innings.
The Punjab skipper explained that the team management believed pace bowlers would be more effective because of the assistance available for seamers from the pitch. However, the strategy failed to produce consistent breakthroughs as Delhi’s middle order accelerated during the chase.
Delhi Capitals Pull Off Record Chase
Delhi Capitals produced a composed batting effort under pressure after Punjab Kings set a demanding target.
Captain Axar Patel led from the front with a crucial half-century, while David Miller provided important support in the middle overs. Axar reached his fifty with a boundary during a key phase of the chase.
Young all-rounder Madhav Tiwari also made a significant impact with contributions in both departments, helping Delhi maintain momentum in a tense contest.
Delhi eventually crossed the finish line with an over to spare, underlining the batting-friendly nature of modern IPL contests despite the assistance available to bowlers earlier in the innings.

Why the Result Matters
The result strengthens Delhi Capitals’ campaign in IPL 2026 and highlights the growing importance of fielding standards in T20 cricket.
In high-scoring matches, dropped catches and missed opportunities often prove decisive. Punjab Kings’ inability to capitalise on key moments allowed Delhi’s batting unit to stay in control of the chase.
For Punjab, the defeat raises concerns about consistency in pressure situations, especially with the tournament entering a crucial phase where net run rate and close finishes can influence playoff qualification.
What’s Next
Punjab Kings will now look to address their fielding concerns ahead of their upcoming fixtures, while Delhi Capitals will aim to build on the momentum from one of their most significant chases of the season.
The victory not only boosts Delhi’s confidence but also sets a new benchmark for successful run chases at the Dharamshala stadium in IPL history.
