IPL 2026 Orange Cap Race Tightens as Virat Kohli Leads, Prabhsimran Singh and Shreyas Iyer Close In

Punjab Kings’ dominant win over Mumbai Indians reshapes the batting charts, while the Purple Cap standings remain largely unchanged after Match 24.

New Delhi, April 17: The race for the IPL 2026 Orange Cap intensified after Match 24, with Punjab Kings’ emphatic victory over Mumbai Indians adding fresh momentum to the tournament’s top run-scorers list. While Virat Kohli continues to lead the standings, standout performances from Prabhsimran Singh and Shreyas Iyer have significantly narrowed the gap.

Orange Cap Race Gains Momentum

Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Virat Kohli remains at the top of the Orange Cap leaderboard, continuing his consistent run in the tournament.

However, Punjab Kings batters Prabhsimran Singh and captain Shreyas Iyer made major gains following their unbeaten knocks against Mumbai Indians. Prabhsimran’s explosive 80 off 39 balls lifted him to fifth place with 211 runs, while Iyer’s composed 66 off 35 deliveries pushed him to sixth with 203 runs.

The latest reshuffle has intensified competition among the leading run-scorers as the league stage progresses.

Among the other frontrunners, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Heinrich Klaasen and Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Rajat Patidar remain close behind Kohli. SRH’s Ishan Kishan is also firmly in contention.

Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi slipped to seventh in the standings after being dismissed for a duck in the latest round of matches.

Purple Cap Standings Largely Stable

The Purple Cap race, awarded to the tournament’s leading wicket-taker, saw little movement after Match 24.

Gujarat Titans pacer Prasidh Krishna and Chennai Super Kings’ Anshul Kamboj continue to share the top spot with 10 wickets each.

Lucknow Super Giants’ Prince Yadav and Rajasthan Royals spinner Ravi Bishnoi remain close behind with nine wickets apiece.

Further down the list, Rajasthan Royals’ Jofra Archer, Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Krunal Pandya remain in the mix with seven wickets each.

Mumbai Indians all-rounder Shardul Thakur entered the top 10 after moving to six wickets, adding another name to the increasingly competitive bowling leaderboard.

What This Means for the Tournament

With the IPL entering a crucial phase, individual performances are beginning to play a larger role in shaping both the points table and personal milestone races.

Punjab Kings’ latest win not only boosted their campaign but also elevated two of their key batters into serious Orange Cap contention. As high-profile fixtures approach, both the batting and bowling charts are expected to remain closely contested.

Looking Ahead

With several marquee clashes scheduled in the coming days, the Orange and Purple Cap races are likely to witness further changes. The performances of top-order batters and strike bowlers in upcoming matches could prove decisive as the tournament moves deeper into its league phase.
