IPL 2026: Shreyas Iyer pinpoints where Punjab Kings “fell a bit short” after first defeat of the season

Punjab Kings’ unbeaten run in IPL 2026 came to an end after a high-scoring thriller against Rajasthan Royals, and captain Shreyas Iyer did not shy away from identifying the key reason behind the loss.

Despite posting an imposing 222/4, Punjab Kings failed to defend the total as Rajasthan Royals completed the chase with four balls to spare, handing PBKS their first defeat of the campaign. The result ended what had been one of the most impressive starts to the season by any team.

According to Iyer, the decisive factor was not the batting effort, but the team’s inability to execute its bowling plans in crucial phases of the innings.

“We fell a bit short in our bowling”

Speaking after the match, Iyer admitted that Punjab’s bowlers failed to deliver on the pre-match strategy.

“I think we fell a bit short in our bowling, in terms of execution.”

He explained that the team had a clear plan built around slower deliveries and yorkers, especially on a surface that appeared slightly tacky and slower than usual.

“We had planned to bowl a lot of slower ones, pace off, yorkers. I think we fell a bit short over there.”

The Punjab skipper’s assessment reflects the fine margins that often define T20 cricket, where even a 220-plus total can quickly become vulnerable if the bowling unit misses its lengths under pressure.

A total that should have been enough

Punjab Kings had every reason to feel confident at the innings break.

Their batting unit produced a commanding performance, with the middle order accelerating brilliantly to push the score past the 220-mark. On most nights, such a total would be considered match-winning.

Iyer himself praised the batting display and felt the score was highly competitive.

“I thought the total on the board was a brilliant score.”

The PBKS captain noted that the wicket was not the easiest for strokeplay early on, which made the batting effort even more significant.

Rajasthan Royals’ middle-order partnership turns the game

The turning point came during Rajasthan’s chase when the middle order stitched together a crucial unbeaten partnership in the latter half of the innings.

That stand shifted momentum away from Punjab and exposed the visiting side’s inability to control the death overs.

Iyer specifically highlighted that phase as the one that cost his side the match.

The Royals’ finishing pair kept the required rate in check and punished anything off line, ultimately ensuring the chase never spiraled out of control.

Modern T20 cricket becoming tougher for bowlers

One of the more striking observations from Iyer’s post-match reaction was his broader comment on how T20 batting has evolved.

He suggested that bowlers across the league are increasingly under pressure as batters now attack from the very first delivery.

“This is the format where players have changed their game, and when they come in, they go bang from ball one.”

That statement captures a growing trend in IPL 2026, where totals once considered safe are regularly being chased down.

With aggressive batting approaches, improved power-hitting depth, and fearless finishing, captains are finding it harder than ever to protect even big scores.

No panic for Punjab Kings despite the loss

While the defeat ended Punjab’s perfect start, the team remains among the top sides in the points table and is still firmly in the playoff race.

Iyer struck a composed tone after the game, suggesting that the result should be viewed as a learning moment rather than a setback.

The loss may, in fact, serve as an early-season reminder that their bowling combinations and execution in pressure overs need refinement.

For a side that has shown consistency with the bat, the focus in the coming fixtures is likely to shift toward improving death-over control and adapting faster to changing match conditions.

Punjab Kings still look like serious contenders in IPL 2026, but as Iyer admitted, in a tournament where batters dominate, execution with the ball can make all the difference.
