Pat Cummins Cleared for IPL Return, Set to Rejoin Sunrisers Hyderabad After Back Injury Recovery

Australia captain Pat Cummins has been medically cleared to resume bowling without restrictions, handing Sunrisers Hyderabad a major boost for the second half of the IPL season as the franchise pushes for a playoff spot.

Pat Cummins is set to return to India this week after receiving clearance from Cricket Australia following a scheduled fitness assessment and scan in Sydney. The fast bowler, who has been recovering from a back stress injury, is expected to rejoin Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday and could be available for selection later this month.

Return Boost for Sunrisers Hyderabad

Cummins’ return comes at a crucial phase of the Indian Premier League, with Sunrisers Hyderabad currently placed fourth in the points table after two wins from five matches. His comeback is expected to strengthen both the team’s pace attack and leadership group as the tournament moves into its decisive stretch.

While the Australian pacer is set to rejoin the squad immediately, team management is expected to take a cautious approach to his reintegration. Rather than rushing him into action, Sunrisers are likely to target the April 25 fixture against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur as the most probable date for his return to competitive cricket.

Cummins has missed most of the season due to a lumbar bone stress issue that had limited him to just one professional appearance since August last year.

Medical Clearance Ends Long Recovery Phase

The latest medical clearance marks the end of a lengthy rehabilitation process overseen by Cricket Australia’s medical staff. Earlier this month, Cummins had briefly returned to Australia for a final scan, with officials describing it as a scheduled assessment rather than a setback.

Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Daniel Vettori had earlier expressed optimism over the pacer’s recovery, saying the player had looked sharp during training and had progressed well through his strength and conditioning program.

His return could also see him resume captaincy duties after the role was temporarily handled by Ishan Kishan during his absence.

Bigger Focus on Australia’s Test Calendar

Beyond the IPL, Cummins’ fitness is particularly significant for Australia’s demanding international schedule beginning in August. The team is set for an intense run of Test cricket, including series against Bangladesh, South Africa, New Zealand, India, and a potential World Test Championship final, followed by the Ashes.

In a recent podcast appearance, Cummins reiterated his desire to continue playing across all three formats while carefully managing his workload.

“I still want to play all three formats. Test cricket means the world to me.”

His comments underline the importance of a measured comeback, especially with Australia potentially facing up to 21 Tests over the next 12 months.

Why This Matters

For Sunrisers Hyderabad, Cummins’ return could be season-defining. As one of the most experienced fast bowlers in world cricket and the team’s designated leader, his presence offers both tactical depth and control in pressure situations.

For Australia, the successful recovery is equally important ahead of a packed red-ball calendar where Cummins remains central to the side’s plans as captain and strike bowler.

If his return proceeds as expected, the IPL could serve as the ideal platform for the 33-year-old to rebuild match fitness before the international season begins.
