Ukraine says its wartime maritime experience could help protect one of the world’s most critical shipping routes, as global powers weigh a joint mission in the Strait of Hormuz.
Kyiv, April 18: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday offered Ukraine’s naval and maritime security expertise to support international efforts aimed at safeguarding navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway vital to global energy supplies.
Speaking at a virtual summit attended by representatives from around 50 countries and co-chaired by France and the United Kingdom, Zelenskyy said Ukraine’s experience in maintaining shipping access in the Black Sea during the war with Russia could be applied to the Middle East crisis.
Ukraine Proposes Joint Maritime Security Mission
Zelenskyy called for coordinated international action, including potential demining, vessel escort operations, and aerial threat defence, to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
He stressed that the outcome of current efforts would send a broader geopolitical message.
Decisions taken on Hormuz now will shape how other hostile actors view the possibility of disrupting major global sea routes, Zelenskyy said during the summit.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most strategically significant maritime chokepoints, with a substantial share of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments passing through it. Any disruption to this route can quickly affect global fuel prices and international supply chains.
Black Sea Experience at the Core of Ukraine’s Offer
Zelenskyy pointed to Ukraine’s efforts to restore shipping access in the Black Sea despite Russia’s naval pressure and blockade attempts.
Kyiv’s strategy has included maritime corridor management, mine-clearance operations, drone defence systems, and protection for merchant vessels.
He said these capabilities, developed under wartime conditions, position Ukraine to contribute meaningfully to any multinational maritime security initiative.
Expanding Security Cooperation in the Gulf
The Ukrainian president also highlighted Kyiv’s growing defence cooperation with Gulf countries, particularly in countering drone-based threats.
Ukraine has already shared expertise with Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, while discussions are reportedly expanding to Oman, Kuwait, and Bahrain.
This broader engagement reflects Kyiv’s efforts to convert battlefield experience into strategic international partnerships.
Wider Security Concerns for Ukraine
The proposal comes as Ukraine continues to face security challenges on its own territory.
Separately, Zelenskyy warned that Russia appears to be strengthening military infrastructure near the Belarus border, raising concerns about the possibility of renewed pressure on Ukraine’s northern front.
The timing of the offer also reinforces Kyiv’s attempt to remain diplomatically relevant beyond Eastern Europe by positioning itself as a contributor to wider global security efforts.
