Spin attack powers Chennai to second consecutive home win as Kolkata’s struggles continue
Chennai, April 15:
Chennai Super Kings registered a 32-run victory over Kolkata Knight Riders in an IPL 2026 match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Tuesday, strengthening their position in the tournament while deepening KKR’s early-season concerns.
Batting first after losing the toss, CSK put up 192 for 5 in their 20 overs. Sanju Samson anchored the innings with a steady 48, ensuring stability through the middle overs. Ayush Mhatre provided early momentum with a quick 38 off 17 deliveries, while Dewald Brevis added 41 runs to keep the scoring rate healthy despite a slowdown in the final overs.
In response, KKR struggled to build momentum in their chase of 193. Finn Allen was dismissed early, and Sunil Narine scored 24 before returning to the pavilion. Captain Ajinkya Rahane, along with Angkrish Raghuvanshi, attempted to steady the innings, but a series of wickets after the halfway stage derailed the chase. At 90 for 6, KKR were left with a steep task.
CSK’s bowlers, particularly the spinners, played a decisive role in the outcome. Noor Ahmad led the attack with figures of 3 for 23, removing key batters including Rahane, Cameron Green and Rinku Singh. Anshul Kambhoj picked up two wickets, while Khaleel Ahmed and Akeal Hosein claimed one each to maintain pressure throughout the innings.
A late 63-run partnership between Rovman Powell and Ramandeep Singh offered brief resistance, but the required run rate proved too high. KKR eventually finished at 160 for 7 in their 20 overs, falling short by 32 runs.
The result gives CSK back-to-back home wins and highlights their effectiveness in spin-friendly conditions at Chepauk. For KKR, the defeat marks their fourth of the season, adding pressure to improve batting consistency and overall performance in the matches ahead.
