Search operations by central agencies covered business premises and the residence of a Trinamool Congress candidate as West Bengal Assembly elections continue.
Kolkata, April 17 — The Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Income Tax Department carried out coordinated search operations at multiple locations in Kolkata on Friday, amid the ongoing West Bengal Assembly elections.
The ED conducted raids at premises linked to a real estate company and a construction firm, while Income Tax officials searched several sites, including the residence and offices associated with Trinamool Congress candidate Debasish Kumar.
Multiple Searches Across Kolkata and Salt Lake
According to sources, several ED teams, accompanied by central security personnel, left the CGO Complex in the morning and launched simultaneous operations across Kolkata and Salt Lake.
At least four locations connected to a real estate company were searched. Officials also inspected the office of a construction firm as part of the operation.
The searches are understood to be linked to an ongoing financial fraud investigation. Investigators are reportedly examining suspected illegal financial transactions and land-related dealings, a development that comes at a politically sensitive time as the state votes in the Assembly elections.
Officials familiar with the matter said the construction company had also faced similar searches in earlier investigations.
Income Tax Searches Include TMC Candidate’s Premises
In a parallel operation, the Income Tax Department conducted searches at multiple addresses in the city, including the residence of Debasish Kumar, the sitting MLA from Rasbehari and a candidate of the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (AITC).
Searches were carried out at his home on Manoharpukur Road, along with his election office on the same stretch and another office located on Motilal Nehru Road.
No official statement detailing the findings of the searches had been issued at the time of publication.
Political Questions Raised During Election Period
The timing of the raids has triggered political reactions, with the ruling Trinamool Congress questioning the action by central agencies during the election period.
Party leaders alleged that the simultaneous operations by the ED and the Income Tax Department were politically motivated, an allegation that has surfaced repeatedly in past election cycles involving central agency action.
No response from the agencies on the political allegations was immediately available.
Why This Matters
Searches by central agencies during an active election phase often draw heightened public and political scrutiny, particularly when they involve candidates or individuals linked to major political parties.
The ED typically investigates cases related to money laundering and financial crimes under relevant laws, while the Income Tax Department examines possible tax evasion and undisclosed assets.
Such actions can influence the political narrative during elections, even as agencies maintain that investigations are based on evidence and due process.
What Happens Next
Officials are expected to continue examining documents, financial records, and transaction trails seized during the raids.
Further details, including any seizures, summons, or formal statements from the agencies and the political parties involved, are awaited.
